THE GIMP for WINDOWS 23-Sep-2000
THE GREATEST GRAPHICS PROGRAM ON EARTH! This proggie does everything from advanced painting to image manipulation. Every concievable format is supported; gif,jpg,png,tiff etc. It also has advanced export optimization capabilities. While not really an graphics editor like a paint program, the GIMP is more of a sophisticated image manipulator. A substantial part of its work involves script-fu generated logos, backgrounds etc. There really isnt too much one can do with Photoshop that cannot be done with the GIMP. The logo you see here, and banner up top were made in seconds with THE GIMP. I honestly think this is the best freeware I have ever seen. Originally begun on a Nix platform, it is now fully established as a Windows app. It is GNU open-source as well!

The original Japanese Edition was created and developed by the author, Isao Maruoka, but has also been aggressively raised by its fans, which makes this software to be quite unique and different from other tools. The program is basically an essential paint program with a very intuitive gui.

Free program for creating sophisticated 3-D graphics. The Persistance of Vision Ray Tracer (POV-Ray) is an all-round excellent package, but there are two things that particularly make it stand out above the rest of the crowd. Firstly, it's free, and secondly, the source is distributed so you can compile it on virtually any platform. POV-Ray is based on David Buck's original ray tracer, DKB-Trace and has been (and still is) developed and supported by a whole crowd of people on CompuServe Graphics Developers' Forum.

KAOS RHEI 30-Mar-2000
Kaos Rhei is a program for rendering fractal images which can be used in as stand-alone images, textures or bump maps for 3D rendering. It currently supports more than a dozen different fractal types, including M-Sets, N-Sets and N/M-Sets. A unique formula parser gives you full control over the coloring of the fractals, either using a preset 256-color palette, or applying different formulas to RGB or HLS color space. Image size is only limited by the available memory. Additional features include integration of plasma clouds, several filters, and various fractal options such as inverted fractals.
